Efficient Way to Turn off Guest Operating System in Windows 2012 Server

By default a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V virtual machine is configured to automatically save the state of the virtual machines when the physical computer is turned off without shutting down the guest operating systems. With this configuration, if the corresponding service was running during the shutting down of the physical computer, the virtual machines automatically boot up from the saved state after the physical computer powers on again.
With this kind of default configuration, the overall boot time of the physical Windows Server 2012 becomes quite slow.
In order to use the virtual machines efficiently, you can configure the Hyper-V VMs to automatically shut down before the physical computer is finally shut down.
Here is how you can configure the Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V virtual machine settings in order to get the optimum results:

  1. Using the appropriate account that has the required privileges, log on to the Windows Server 2012 computer on which the Hyper-V role is installed.
  2. If not already started, initialize the Server Manager window from the bottom left corner of the screen.
  3. Once the Server Manager window is initialized, from the left pane, click to select the Hyper-V category.
  4. From the right pane, under the SERVERS section, right-click the Hyper-V server from the available list.
  5. From the context menu that appears, click the Hyper-V Manager option.

  6. On the opened Hyper-V Manager snap-in, from the left pane, right-click the name of the server. (DC-01 for this demonstration.).
  7. From the context menu, make sure that the service is started and all the contextual options are visible. If the service is not started, you must click the Start Service option from the context menu, and then right-click the server name again and continue with the instructions.

  8. From the center pane, click to select and then right-click the virtual machine on which you want to mount the bootable ISO image to install the required operating system.
  9. From the context menu, click Settings.

  10. From the opened box, from the left pane, under the Management section, click to select the Automatic Stop Action category.
  11. From the right pane, click to select the Shut down the guest operating system radio button.

  12. Once this is done, click OK to save the changes that you have made.
