Sharing A Printer in Windows XP, 98 & ME

Hi All,

Here I am going to give the clear explanation of "How to share a printer in Network which is connected to a single computer" ?


Setting up the host computer running Windows 98SE, Windows Me, or Windows 2000
At the computer that is directly connected to the Printer (Eg HP Laserjet 1160), perform the following steps:
  1. Click Start , click Settings , and then click Printers .
  2. In the printer list, right-click the icon for your (Eg HP Laserjet 1160),series printer, and then click Sharing .
    If Sharing does not appear on the right-click menu, you must first enable printer sharing for Windows 98SE or Windows Me. Follow these steps:
    1. Click Start , click Settings , and then click Control Panel .
    2. Double-click the Network icon.
    3. On the General tab, click File and Print Sharing .
    4. Click the I want to be able to allow others to print to my printers check box , and then click OK .
    5. Click OK again, and then close the Control Panel . If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes .
  3. On the Sharing tab, click the Share As option button, and then type a name for the product in the Share Name field. Click OK .

Setting up the host computer running Windows XP
At the computer directly connected to the (Eg HP Laserjet 1160) series printer, perform the following steps:
  1. Click Start , and then click Printers and Faxes .
  2. In the printer list, right-click the icon for your (Eg HP Laserjet 1160) series printer, and then click Sharing .
  3. On the Sharing tab, click the Share this printer option button, and then type a name for the product in the Share Name field. Click OK .
  4. Click the Ports tab. Click to clear the Enable bidirectional support check box, and then click OK .

Setting up the client computers
When you have set up the host computer to share your (Eg HP Laserjet 1160) series printer, you must also configure the client computers. Perform the following steps at the computers of all other network users who want to use the (Eg HP Laserjet 1160), printer.
Setting up client computers running Windows 98SE, Windows Me, or Windows 2000
  1. Click Start , click Settings , and then click Printers .
  2. Double-click the Add Printer icon to open the Add Printer wizard.
  3. Click Next to start the wizard.
  4. Click the Network Printer option button, and then click Next .
  5. Type in the path and share name of the (Eg HP Laserjet 1160) series printer to which you want to connect.
    OR
    Click Browse and navigate to find the (Eg HP Laserjet 1160) series printer to which you want to connect.
    Click Next .
  6. Click the Yes or No option button when asked if you want to use this printer as your default printer for Windows-based programs, and then click Next .
  7. Click Finish to complete the installation and close the Add Printer wizard.
    You might need the product software CD to complete the printer driver installations.
Setting up client computers running Windows XP
  1. Click Start , and then click Printers and Faxes .
  2. On the left-hand column, under Printer Tasks , click Add a printer to open the Add Printer wizard.
  3. Click Next to start the wizard.
  4. Click the A network printer or a printer attached to another computer option button, and then click Next .
  5. Type in the path and share name of the (Eg HP Laserjet 1160) series printer to which you want to connect
    OR
    Click Browse and navigate to find the (Eg HP Laserjet 1160) series printer to which you want to connect.
    Click Next .
  6. Click the Yes or No option button when asked if you want to use this printer as your default printer for Windows-based programs, and then click Next .
  7. Click Finish to complete the installation and close the Add Printer wizard .
Disable bidirectional support
It is recommended that bidirectional printing support be disabled in all installed printed drivers for the product after setting up the shared print drivers.
Microsoft Windows XP and 2000
  1. Open the Printers folder.
    • Microsoft Windows XP: Click Start , Printers and Faxes from the Microsoft Windows XP desktop.
    • Microsoft Windows 2000: Click Start , Settings , Printers from the Microsoft Windows 2000 desktop.
  2. Right-click the print driver Icon or listing.
  3. Select Properties from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click the Ports tab and then disable bidirectional support by removing the checkmark from the Enable Bidirectional support box.
  5. Click the Advanced tab and verify there is no checkmark in Keep Printed Documents .
  6. Click the Apply button and then click the OK button until the printers window is closed.
Microsoft Windows Me and 98
  1. Click Start , Settings , Printers from the Microsoft Windows desktop.
  2. Right-click the  print driver Icon or listing.
  3. Select Properties from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click the Detail tab and then click the Spool Settings button.
  5. Select Disable bidirectional support for this printer.
  6. Click the Apply button and then click the OK button until the printers Window is closed.
